Informational meeting on Tues, Sept 20 in Humanities 1217

about us

UWisLit is a RSO (registered student organization) at UW-Madison. Sponsored by the College of Letters & Science Honors Program and the Faculty Honors Committee, we started this program in May of 2009 to enable students at the UW to reach out to their fellow Madisonians, break the walls between the university and the community, and to experience life lessons not covered in the classroom.

UWisLit brings together, supports, and trains students interested in becoming tutors in basic literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL). With our partners, the Literacy Network and Office of Human Resource Development, we work to improve the lives of adult language learners through literacy education and advocacy.

Literacy Network is a not-for-profit organization committed to providing basic literacy services to adults and families in Dane County so they may achieve their employment, education and family goals.

The Office of Human Resource Development’s Cultural Linguistic Services Unit provides ESL and basic Mathematics literacy services to UW-Madison employees who wish to acquire additional proficiency in these areas. Examples of individuals who may be tutored include custodial staff, international scholars, maintenance staff, and teaching assistants.

UWisLit offers free on-campus training sessions for new tutors. After completing the required training, tutors commit to spending two hours per week tutoring either on an individual or small group basis. UWisLit also advocates for literacy; UW students need not be tutors to be members of UWisLit.

To get involved, come to one of our meetings or sign up for a training session!
